Well, I guess we knew it had to happen–anything so cute (and Hollywood contrived) as to be called “Brangelina” had to end eventually. These aren’t the 1930’s-1950’s when all the movies and marriages ended happily ever after (or at least they pretended to). But with today’s media, nothing can be kept private, or can it? If Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have had the sense to convert their divorce to the private matter it should have always been, why can’t everyone else do that, too, and why wouldn’t they want to? Roy Disney and Robin Williams are notable famous people who opted for collaborative divorces, which, by the way, doesn’t mean they are not still very hard and very emotional work, but they are PRIVATE, as all family matters should be. I appreciate Wendy Paris and her book, Splitopia, which talks about how couples and families, like she and her former husband and their child, have changed the way they want to divorce and restructure their family. In one of her recent blogs, she talks about how, contrary to what many people might think, it is actually lawyers in the trenches of family law who have developed alternatives to court, such as Collaborative Divorce. While there are still cases that the clients either want or just need to fight out in court, the vast majority of couples and families can and do succeed in managing their divorces privately, through Collaborative Divorce. Please see Wendy’s blog on “How Good Divorce Lawyers Have Improved Divorce.”
Camille Milner is a Collaborative Divorce Lawyer in Denton, Texas. She is currently the president of Collaborative Divorce Texas, a statewide organization that promotes the collaborative divorce method as the preferred method for divorce in Texas. Camille Milner believes that the collaborative method of divorce protects the privacy, maintains confidentiality that is impossible in open court and seeks to assure that the children in a divorce are not put in the middle of the divorce but are instead elevated to be a priority for divorcing parents.
