“Court is the Last Place You Want to Be,” Judge Michele Lowrance. Why a Judge Would Support a Different Way to Divorce?

October 14, 2025 By Camille Milner

Abraham Lincoln famously said, “Discourage litigation. Persuade your neighbors to compromise whenever you can. Point out to them how the nominal winner is often a real loser — in fees, expenses, and waste of time.”

Former Judge Michele Lowrance wrote The Good Karma Divorce. She has been a family lawyer, family court judge, was a child of divorce and went through a divorce herself. She shares her wisdom from those experiences with us, to help couples protect themselves, their children and their estate from the conflict and loss that comes from litigation. She says she wrote this book because she heard from a little boy whose parents were in a high conflict divorce. He told her, “If I were dead, my parents wouldn’t fight anymore.” Judge Lowrance states that what parents say and their actions don’t always match up. She explains that it is clear to judges that people, unintentionally hurt their children by going to Court hoping for emotional justice and vindication, which does not come. She said, “The Court has a gavel, not a magic wand.”

Judge Lowrance says, “Don’t put your life in our hands to fix. Keep it in your own hands.”

Judge Lowrance was featured as a guest on Good Morning America with Robin Roberts, where she talked about her experiences and her wish for couples and their children–to stay OUT of Court. Please also read this except of Judge Lowrance’s book highlighted by Good Morning America.

The Collaborative Divorce process provides the opportunity for couples to stay out of Court and protect their children. The International Academy of Collaborative Professionals has produced a short video explaining the advantages to using the Collaborative Divorce process to protect their children, themselves and their estate from the damage that can come from a Court-managed divorce.

If you or anyone you know is needing a divorce, please help them consider the Collaborative Divorce process.
